J. L. (Jim) Popowich

Jim Popowich is Past President and CEO of Elk Valley Coal Corporation.

Jim has worked many decades in the coal industry, holding senior positions with Cominco, Fording Coal Limited and Elk Valley Coal Corporation.

Jim is well known for promoting the interface between economics and the environment for the good of the coal industry and society.  He has also continually promoted productivity improvements and technological innovations.  Jim believes that advances at the operations level will benefit the coal industry as a whole.

As a staunch advocate of supporting the communities where we live and work, he believes in the adage, 'lead by example.  Throughout the years, Jim has supported many community initiatives from both a personal and business perspective.  From volunteer fireman, curling club president, fastball executive committee member, Jaycees member, to Block Watch Captain, Jim has given his time and attention to helping the communities where he and wife, Laverne, have made their home.

Jim maintains memberships and affiliations with the Association of Professional Engineers - Alberta Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, is Past Director and Past President of Alberta Chamber Resources and a Past Member of Alberta Economic Development Authority.
